Wrap-up

You’ve reached the end of the journey. It’s worth looking back at what was done.

We started by talking about work and productivity, and the realization that productivity depends more on the environment than on each person’s effort. We end here by building a different environment: with a defined unit of work, machine-readable knowledge, evidence of quality, limits in code, and accountability by name.

None of these concepts, on its own, creates a Cognitive Enterprise. What creates one is the change they produce together: human work shifts from operating the line to designing, measuring, and improving the line.

There is a test to know whether this has happened. Pick one process in your company and ask:

If I removed the agents today, would it go back to working the way it did before?

If it would, you automated. If it would not, because the roles, decision points, and metrics were redesigned along with it, then the change happened.
