Multi-agent is an expensive answer to a specific problem. Before adopting it, have the number that justifies it.

This stage also introduced protocol: written roles, fixed exchange formats, explicit handoff criteria. It is the same thing that makes a human team work, and, as in a human team, what usually breaks is coordination more than individual competence.
